How to Improve Water Pressure In Your Home

Low water pressure can be inconvenient in homes, having a negative impact on shower performance, how long it takes to fill a pan, or washing machines running for hours because they can’t get enough water in.

We have broken down normal water pressure levels and, if necessary, what you can do to improve your home’s water pressure effectively.

What is Normal Water Pressure in PSI?

Let’s first establish that it’s worth knowing what you’re dealing with.

Normal water pressure in a UK home typically sits between 1 and 3 bar, which translates to roughly 14 to 43 PSI. Most homes are happiest around the 2 to 2.5 bar mark. Anything below 1 bar, and you’ll notice it. Anything above 3.5 bar and you risk damaging appliances over time.

You can check yours with a pressure gauge attached to an outside tap or the stopcock. They’re inexpensive and take about two minutes to use, and this is worth doing before anything else.

Things to Check First

A lot of pressure problems have surprisingly simple causes. Start with your stopcock, usually found under the kitchen sink or where the mains pipe enters the house. If it’s only partially open, that alone could be strangling your flow. Turn it fully anticlockwise and see if things improve.

The same applies to any isolator valves on individual appliances or supply pipes. They can get knocked partially closed without anyone noticing, especially if you’ve had any plumbing work done recently.

If you’re on a shared supply with neighbouring properties, such as in a terrace or an older semi, low pressure from the street could be affecting you too. That’s something to raise with your water supplier rather than something you can fix yourself.

Does Turning Off the Mains Water Affect the Boiler?

This comes up a lot, and the short answer is: it can, depending on your system. If you have a combi boiler, it draws directly from the mains, so cutting the water supply means no hot water and no central heating. The boiler won’t fire up without adequate water pressure. Most combis actually display a pressure warning on the dial when levels drop too low, usually below around 0.5 bar on the internal gauge.

If you have a traditional system with a cold water storage tank in the loft, turning off the mains will drain that tank over time, eventually cutting supply to your taps and the hot water cylinder. So yes, turning off the mains affects the boiler in both cases, just in different ways and over different timescales.

When you turn the mains back on after any work, give the system a few minutes to re-pressurise before firing the boiler back up. If your combi boiler is showing low pressure after the mains has been off, you may need to top it up via the filling loop.

How do I Get Stronger Water Pressure In My House?

If the issue is isolated to one area, such as the shower or upstairs taps, it’s often a partially blocked aerator, a faulty shower valve, or scale buildup in older pipes. Descaling or replacing an aerator is straightforward.

For whole-house pressure issues, a booster pump is worth considering. These are installed on the incoming supply and can significantly increase flow throughout the property. They’re a reasonable option for homes at the end of a long supply pipe, properties on a hill, or older houses where the mains pressure has always been a bit weak. Installation is a job for a qualified plumber.

If you have a gravity-fed system with a header tank, the height of the tank relative to your outlets determines pressure. This is why upstairs showers often suffer most. You can either raise the tank, fit a pump to the shower feed specifically, or consider converting to a combi boiler which runs off mains pressure directly.
