What Causes a Boiler to Break Down?

Yes, boilers are sturdy, but like anything that has moving parts, water, and gas running through it, they can fail for many reasons. Here are common examples:

Low boiler pressure: Pressure gauge below 1 bar? This could be your boiler struggling to work or shutting down, often caused by a small leak in the system or a recent bleeding of radiators.

A faulty thermostat: Sometimes the boiler itself is working fine, but a broken thermostat is sending the wrong signals, leaving you with no heating or hot water even though nothing mechanical has failed.

Frozen condensate pipe: During cold snaps, the pipe that carries waste water away from your boiler can freeze solid, causing the boiler to shut down as a safety measure. This is one of the most common winter callouts we get.

Kettling or limescale build-up: For those in a hard water area, limescale can build around the heat exchanger, causing banging and rumbling noises.

General wear and tear: Boilers typically last 10 to 15 years. As parts age, pumps, valves, and fans can simply wear out and need replacing.

Ignition or pilot light failures: If your boiler won’t fire up at all, the ignition system or pilot light may need attention.

Can I Do My Washing If My Boiler Is Broken?

Whether you can wash your clothes with a broken boiler is dependent on the setup. When it’s a washing machine that gets its water supply from the cold mains, yes, you can do your washing, and most modern machines do this.

The boiler heats water for radiators and taps, but not for the appliance itself, since washing machines heat water internally.

The exception is if you have an older combination system where appliances are plumbed into the hot water supply. In that case, you’ll be left running cold washes until your boiler is fixed, which isn’t ideal but won’t damage your clothes or machine.

Dishwashers work the same way. Most run from the cold feed and heat water internally, so a boiler breakdown shouldn’t stop your daily routine on that front.

Is a Boiler Breakdown an Emergency?

A boiler breakdown isn’t an emergency on its own, but it certainly is in some situations. Treat the issue as urgent and immediately stop using the boiler when there is a:

If it’s simply no heating or hot water with none of the warning signs above, it’s not a safety emergency, but it can still feel urgent, especially in winter or if you have young children, elderly relatives, or anyone vulnerable in the home. In these cases, getting an engineer out quickly is still a priority.

  1. First up, look at the basics; namely, the pressure gauge, thermostat batteries, and ensure the power supply hasn’t tripped.
  2. If there is an error code on the display, note it down to help the engineer when they’re diagnosing the issue. It’ll help them do it faster.
  3. Check outside for a frozen condensate pipe if it’s been particularly cold.
